If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve noticed something about your child that makes you pause. Maybe they’re struggling to focus, finding social situations overwhelming, melting down after school, or just seeming a little different from their peers. And now you’re wondering… “Do I need to get them assessed? Where do I even start?”
First, take a breath. You’re not alone. So many parents stand exactly where you are now... Curious, worried, hopeful, unsure. And reaching out for answers is one of the most supportive things you can do for your child.
At Calm Minds Clinic, we work with families just like yours every day, helping them navigate the assessment process for Autism, ADHD, cognitive concerns, learning challenges and more. Here’s how the whole process works and what you can expect.
Step 1: Trust your instincts
You know your child better than anyone. If you’re noticing something that doesn’t quite fit... Maybe difficulty focusing, sensory sensitivities, big emotions, trouble making friends or challenges with schoolwork, an assessment can help bring clarity.
Getting an assessment doesn’t label your child. It explains them. It opens doors to the right support, which can make daily life easier for everyone at home.
Step 2: Reach out (this part is easier than it feels!)
Many parents think the process is complicated or that they need a referral to get started. You don’t.
You can simply contact Calm Minds Clinic directly.
We offer:
In-person assessments in Geelong, and
Online assessments Australia-wide, which are perfect for busy families or those in regional areas.
If you’re not sure whether an assessment is needed, you can book a consultation with one of our friendly and experienced Psychologists. No pressure, just a caring and informative conversation.
Step 3: We get to know your child
Once you book in, we take the time to understand what’s going on for your child.
This includes:
A consultation with you and your child
A mix of activities, observations and conversations with your child
Standardised assessment tools depending on whether we are looking at Autism, ADHD, cognitive skills, or a combination
Every child is unique - so every assessment plan is tailored.
Step 4: The assessment itself
For children, this part feels more like 'doing activities' than doing a test. We keep everything relaxed, supportive and child-friendly.
If you’re doing your assessment online, don’t worry, telehealth assessments are now well-researched, recognised and designed to feel comfortable for kids. Many children actually do better in their familiar home environment.
If you attend in person in Geelong, you’ll meet one of our warm clinicians who will guide your child through each step at their pace.
Step 5: Understanding the results
This is the part parents often find the most reassuring. We don’t just hand you a report and send you on your way.
Our reports clearly outline:
What we found
What it means
Which supports are available
What to do next
Our goal is clarity and confidence, not confusion. And if there's every something you need more clarity on, you can always reach out to us.
Step 6: Support moving forward
If your child receives a diagnosis, we’re here to help you understand the next steps, from therapy options to practical home strategies.
If they don’t receive a diagnosis, you’ll still walk away with a deeper understanding of your child and specific recommendations to support them.
You don’t have to figure this out alone
Parenting comes with enough guesswork. If you feel unsure about what’s going on for your child, reaching out for an assessment can be the first step toward clarity, support and relief.
At Calm Minds Clinic, we’re here to walk this journey with you - gently, honestly and with genuine care.
Whether you prefer in-person in Geelong or online from the comfort of home, you can reach out anytime for guidance.
If you’re ready to chat or you’d like to book an assessment, we’re here.
You’ve got this. And we’ve got you. We also maintain no waitlists and can usually book you an appointment within just weeks.
